My business is about changing the world, one quilt at a time.
How SEW RUTH Works
You may order an already-made quilt or have one custom-designed. After deducting my materials costs from the purchase price (the labor is a labor of love), the remainder of the proceeds (usually about one-third to one-half of the purchase price) are donated to a cause that is appropriate to the quilt theme or quilt recipient. Organizations chosen for support are those rated highly in charitable giving guides, such as Charity Watch (www.charitywatch.org) or are local charities well-known by the quilter (or the customer). More detailed information about the worthy causes supported by my quilts can be found on the quilt display pages of this website.
When you complete the Inquiry/Order Form and consult with me about your quilt, you provide me with information about the quilt recipient so that I can channel donations appropriately (you also may suggest a cause if you wish). When the completed quilt is sent to you, it is accompanied by a letter indicating the destination of the charitable giving that the sale of the quilt supported. Unless specifically requested, I do not use individuals' names or share personal information with the organization receiving the donation.
A Sampling of Charitable Giving
* Proceeds from Bunny Quilts will be donated to the Ohio House Rabbit Rescue in Columbus, OH, which supports rescue and adoption of neglected and abused domestic bunnies.
* Proceeds from Train and Vehicle Quilts will be donated to the Spike Railroad Museum in Silver Spring, MD, a small, developing museum aimed at preserving our nation's railroad heritage.
* Proceeds from Animal Quilts will be donated to one of several animal protection groups, depending upon the kind of animal(s) featured in the quilt: Environmental Defense Fund; Rainforest Alliance; Ocean Conservancy; National Wildlife Federation; Nature Conservancy; Humane Society of the United States; Pets Lifeline or Lyon Ranch in Sonoma, CA.
* Proceeds from Children's Quilts will be donated to the House of Ruth, a shelter for women and children in Washington, DC or one of several organizations that support youth, such as the Girl Scouts of America or Girls, Inc., the latter of which provides programs for girls of all ages across the U.S. and Canada.
* Proceeds from Wedding and Memory Quilts, as well as Quotation Quilts, will be sent to an organization fitting the quilt theme or recipient. Some examples:
A Memory Quilt to honor a military veteran will support the Wounded Warrior Project or Thanks USA, the latter of which provides educational scholarships to spouses and children of active duty military.
A Quotation Quilt for a retiring teacher with quotes about books and learning will support the Library Foundation, which provides literacy programs at community libraries throughout the U.S.
A Wedding Quilt for avid hikers with a love of the outdoors will support the Sierra Club or the Sonoma Land Trust in Sonoma County, CA.
A Quotation Quilt for a professional woman with quotes by famous women will support Emily's List or the Leadership Institute for Women in Psychology in Washington, DC, the latter of which is a leadership development program for women.
A Memory Quilt made for someone in an eldercare or hospice facility will support the Fisher Center for Alzheimer's Research in NY or the recipient's local hospice.
