Planning Your Quilt

Quilts are a wonderful way to express your caring in a highly personalized way. Style, colors, fabrics, theme, size, and function all are aspects of a quilt that is hand-made, and you have control over all of these design elements when you order one of my quilts.

Is the quilt meant to be decorative or functional or both? If matching a decor is an important consideration, what is the architectural style or decor to be accommodated (Arts & Crafts, modern/contemporary, rustic/mountain, beach cottage, urban/industrial, Asian, southwest, country/farmhouse, Scandinavian, southern elegant, shabby chic)? If functional, is the quilt for a crib, bed, lap, wheelchair, or hospital bed? Will it be dragged around daily by a child or will it be used only during holidays? Will it commemorate an important occasion or life transition for the recipient (marriage, graduation, new job, military service, retirement, new baby)? Is the quilt style soft or bold, contemporary or traditional, simple or complexly patterned? Will the quilt have a theme based on the recipient's favorite activities or interests (hobbies, sports, a favorite animal, or favorite colors)? Will the quilt honor a particular occupation or group of people (firefighters, teachers, nurses, military service members, women, the LGBT community, international children, an ecology center's visitors)? Are there items to be included in the quilt (photos, medals, old clothing, vintage linens, flags)? If you can imagine it, I can probably produce it!

Because my quilts are aimed at supporting worthy causes, I tend to make more than one in a particular theme (e.g., Bunny Quilts, inspirational Quotation Quilts). Check out the QUILT GALLERY page, and you will find my quilts  grouped into themes. As you look through the quilts on each page, you will find great variety -- Bunny Quilts and Animal Quilts, for example, include baby/nursery quilts as you might expect, but also include quilts for teens and adults (including the elderly and people with disabilities), and they are designed for use on beds, laps (including wheelchairs), and walls. Use these pages to get ideas for your own custom quilt.

About My Quilts

My quilts range in style from fairly traditional to contemporary/modern to art quilts, and i use a variety of methods and materials. All of my quilts are made in a pet-free, smoke-free, green clean environment. I use high-quality cotton fabrics (including cotton flannel) for the tops and backings, unless a request is made for an alternative fabric such as fleece or silk. I use cotton or cotton/polyester batting on most quilts, but also use wool or bamboo, especially in art quilts.
I sometimes hand-tie the quilt layers together with coordinating embroidery thread, a finishing method I like because it highlights the individual fabrics and gives the quilt an obvious handmade look. However, my quilts also are machine-quilted, hand-quilted, or some combination of all three methods, as per quilt style and your preferences.

All of my quilts except art quilts (which are made only for display) can be machine washed and dried on cool/gentle settings.

Sizes are largely a matter of individual preferences based on quilt function. My quilts (and the labels I use) conform loosely to the following standard quilt measurements (in inches):
* Baby/Crib/Nursery Quilts: 36 X 40
* Kids', Teens', or Adult Lap (including Wheelchair Lap) Quilts:  40-50 X 50-65
* Wall, Doll, or Tabletop Quilts: Sizes vary, 15-60 X 24-100
* Twin Bed Topper Quilts: 50 X 80
* Queen Bed Topper Quilts: 70 X 80
* King Bed Topper Quilts: 80 X 80

Pricing of my quilts depends upon the type, size, style, complexity, fabric choice, and time frame, and is negotiated individually with each customer after I am clear about what is needed. The following may be helpful as "ballpark" estimates based ONLY on size:
1) Baby/Crib/Nursery quilts: $90 - $150
2) Kids', Teens, Lap quilts: $100 - $185
3) Wall, Doll, Tabletop quilts: $50 - $450*
4) Twin Bed Toppers: $150 - $300
5) Queen Bed Toppers: $175 - $375
6) King Bed Toppers: $225 - $500

*Note that Category 3 likely includes many Wedding/Memory and Quotation Quilts, as well as art quilts, which vary greatly in size, materials, and logistical complexity, reflected in the very broad estimated price range. Contact me to discuss your needs.
